The best sci-fi and
fantasy work, whether in print or film, stretches us
to become more than we thought was possible.
Through fiction we can imagine realities that must
certainly exist but which seem ludicrous if
presented as plausible fact. I have watched certain
movies and read certain books over and over again
because I knew they contained some soul expanding
concepts that I needed to integrate into my
consciousness (and it never hurt that they were
immensely enjoyable as well). KVS

The Mists of Avalon
by Marion
Zimmer Bradley
Step into the ancient
legends of King Arthur’s Camelot—but this
time through the eyes of the powerful women
who shaped that world. Bradley’s
magnificent story is not just a chronicle
of the war between the Saxons and the
Britons, but the struggle between Druid and
Christian views of reality. The first time
I read this book I plunged through its
nearly 500 pages in just a few days
(obviously I did little else). I lived
through the characters, in turns exhilarated,
shocked, delighted, empowered, frightened,
dismayed, angry and sorrowful. By the time
I finished I was exhausted and yet somehow
at peace. I have since read it again at
least 20 times, and with each read I find
some new wisdom.

 The
Fifth Sacred Thing
The Fifth
Sacred Thing is one of the most mind
expanding books I've read when it comes to
possibilities for resolving conflicts
between cultures. How defeat an enemy who
wants to destroy one's way of life, without
becoming what you are fighting against? This
is an old question that Starhawk resolves in
a believable way, with a nod to Ghandi and
Martin Luther King's example of
non-violence. Caution: some people may be
put off by the sexual exploration in this
book, which is not explicit but is
definitely outside of the monogomous
heterosexual norm accepted by most. If
you're willing to stretch on this one or at
least set aside that aspect of the story, I
don't think you'll be disappointed. The
prequel to The Fifth Sacred Thing is the
highly enjoyable Walking to Mercury.

The
Keltiad Trilogy by Patricia Kennealy
Morrison
Copper Crown, The Throne of Scone and The
Silver Branch. Sadly, these gems are all
out of print but you can often find use
copies on Amazon or perhaps your local
library. Morrison creates a totally
believable world in another galaxy settled
by the Tuatha Du Danaan people of Celtic
mythology, who fled earth rather than live
in a world bereft of magic. Celto-philes
will recognize much from history and myth
woven into these tales. The characters are
well drawn and the stories are riveting. If
you can find the whole trilogy, scoop it up
while you can!

The Great Tree of Avalon Child of the Dark Prophecy by
T.A. Barron
Reading T.A. Barron's newest book, I am again reminded
why we so love his work. Where else can you find books
that so delicately combine mythology, care for the
environment, great adventure, and, most importantly, an
experience of the fears and joys of growing up?
Almost a thousand years ago, the great wizard Merlin
planted a seed that grew into a tree. At the roots
sprouted seven kingdoms inhabited by creatures and
beings so diverse and unique that you might wonder how
they could all co-exist.

Shadows on the Stars Great Tree of Avalon-Book Two by
T.A. Barron
T.A. Barron just keeps amazing us with his flowering
epic of Avalon. Book Two sets Tamwyn, Merlin's heir, and
his friends up for the greatest adventure of all -- a
trip inside the great Tree of Avalon into the rarely
explored upper regions. The evil Rhita Gawr is gaining
strength every day and is building an army that will
conquer all of the realms of Avalon. In order to fight
Gawr, Tamwyn must take a voyage to the stars -- a voyage
his father never returned from. As Tamwyn travels into
the very heart of the great tree to discover things he
never imagined, his friends visit a dragon who could
help them track down Rhita Gawr's menacing crystal (if
they don't become the dragon's next meal, that is).

The Eternal Flame The Great Tree of Avalon - Book
Three by T.A. Barron
T.A. Barron's newest series is another reminder of why
we so love his work. Where else can you find books that
so delicately combine mythology, care for the
environment, great adventure, and, most importantly, an
experience of the fears and joys of growing up?
The extraordinary conclusion to The Great Tree of Avalon
trilogy, The Eternal Flame, highlights the final battle
that will either save Avalon or corrupt it forever. Each
of our heroes must fight impossible battles by air,
root, and deep below the ground. While the unexpected
will become heroes, many old heroes will be lost. In the
end we will have the answer we've all been waiting for:
the fate of Merlin's beloved Avalon.
