The ancients believed that springs were “thin places” where one might touch something of the Otherworld—thus the old traditions of throwing coins or other offerings into a body of water.
Standing at the mouth of Big Spring, witnessing the water emerging from deep within the earth and rushing to feed the Current River, I understood the reverence for these special places. The source of the water—and the force driving it to the surface—were hidden from view. The water seemed to erupt from underground by magic! Indeed, it seemed as if we were standing at the intersection of the seen and the unseen.
The words of my favorite Rumi poem kept running through my mind:
Everything you see has its roots in the unseen world. The forms may change, yet the essence remains the same.
Every wondrous sight will vanish, every sweet word shall fade. But do not be disheartened. The Source they come from is eternal, growing, branching out, bringing new life and new joy.
Why do you weep? that source is within you and this whole world is springing up from it.
The source is full. Its waters are ever flowing. Do not grieve; drink your fill. Don’t think it will ever run out. This is the endless ocean.
Surrounded this weekend by the exuberant splendor of nature, I had many opportunities to reflect on the abundant universe. Truly there are no limits to the majesty of manifested creation—and—as Rumi wrote so long ago, “that same source is within you, and this whole world is springing up from it.”
Do you get that?
Do you get that your whole world is
springing up from the same stuff that
makes you, and that you
Do you know who you are?
You are a spark of Divinity, here on earth to experience consciousness in matter.
So often we think small, shrinking ourselves into cramped monotonous spaces, acting like fireflies who don’t realize that the lid has been taken off of the jar.
We get lost in appearances, forgetting
that we are evidence of our Source.
Like the Source of the
My prayer for you is that you awaken to your Creative Self. The Source of all is within you—that same energy that brought birdsong and butterfly wing and crimson leaf into being is being you at this very moment. Play big. Celebrate your magnificence. There are no limits to the beauty you can be.
Blessings,
